Working 3 long days in the Dera Health Clinic, Drs. Jason Horgesheimer, Renn Veater and Paul Hanna were able to treat over 456 patients. Seven assistants, 4 Ethiopian dental students from Addis Ababa University, and local health care workers helped the three dentists. Generators kept work going when electrical brownouts occurred.
This deeply appreciated service relieved severe pain, treated infection and provided health knowledge for the future. Incorporating students from the University benefited the knowledge and experience of upcoming Ethiopian dentist and also gave them a vision of the impact they can have working in rural communities. For the nearly 80 million Ethiopians, there are now just over 100 dentists, many of whom are 4 year undergraduate degrees.
